Link PAN with Aadhaar: the complete guide
If your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar, it may already be inoperative, which quietly causes higher tax deductions, stuck refunds and failed KYC at banks. This guide is for anyone who has not yet linked the two, or whose PAN has stopped working, and walks through paying the late fee and submitting the link on the income tax e-filing portal.
Who needs this
Every individual who holds a PAN and is eligible for Aadhaar must link the two, unless they fall in an exempt group. The free window closed in 2022, and from 1 July 2023 unlinked PANs of non-exempt people became inoperative.
You are exempt if you are:
- aged 80 years or more,
- a non-resident under income tax rules,
- not a citizen of India, or
- a resident of Assam, Meghalaya or Jammu and Kashmir.
If you got your PAN through the instant e-PAN service, it is already linked because it was created from your Aadhaar.
What an inoperative PAN means. Tax refunds are not issued and no interest is paid on them while the PAN is inoperative. TDS and TCS are deducted at higher rates, often 20 percent. Banks, brokers and mutual funds may also block transactions that require a valid PAN. Your PAN is not cancelled; it starts working again after you link it.
Documents explained
You do not upload any documents for the online link. You need:
- Your PAN and Aadhaar numbers.
- Access to your Aadhaar-linked mobile, because the request is confirmed with an OTP.
- A way to pay ₹1,000, such as net banking, debit card or UPI through the e-Pay Tax service.
Matching details. The link succeeds only if your name, date of birth and gender agree on both records. Small differences such as an initial instead of a full name can cause failure. If details differ, correct whichever record is wrong first: PAN corrections go through Protean or UTIITSL, and Aadhaar corrections through myAadhaar or an Aadhaar centre. If online linking still fails, PAN service centres run by Protean and UTIITSL can link using your fingerprint, for an added charge.
Step-by-step process
- Check status. On the e-filing portal, open Link Aadhaar Status from Quick Links and enter both numbers. If it is already linked, you are done.
- Start the link. Choose Link Aadhaar from Quick Links, enter PAN and Aadhaar, and validate. If no fee has been paid, the portal offers to take you to e-Pay Tax.
- Pay the fee. In e-Pay Tax, verify with an OTP on your mobile, choose Income Tax, select the current assessment year and the payment type Other Receipts (500). The ₹1,000 amount fills in automatically. Pay and save the challan.
- Wait a few days. It usually takes four to five working days for the payment to appear against your PAN.
- Submit the request. Return to Link Aadhaar, enter both numbers, confirm your name as on Aadhaar and your mobile number, and enter the OTP.
- Confirm. Check Link Aadhaar Status after a few days. Once linked, an inoperative PAN becomes operative again within about 30 days.
You can also link after logging in to the portal from the Profile section, which follows the same steps.
Fees and timelines
| Item | Amount or time |
|---|---|
| Late fee to link | ₹1,000 |
| Payment showing on portal | About 4 to 5 working days |
| PAN becoming operative again | Within about 30 days of linking |
| Biometric linking at a service centre | ₹1,000 plus centre charge |
The fee is paid once. You do not pay again if the link fails because of a mismatch; fix the details and submit again using the same payment.
Common problems and fixes
Payment made but portal still asks for fee. Wait the full four to five working days. Make sure you chose Other Receipts (500) and the right assessment year; a payment made under a different type will not be recognised for linking.
Name or date of birth mismatch. Correct the wrong record first. After the correction is approved, try linking again.
Aadhaar already linked to another PAN. This can happen if someone used your Aadhaar by mistake. Contact the income tax helpdesk or your jurisdictional assessing officer.
OTP not received. Your Aadhaar mobile number may be outdated. Update it at an Aadhaar centre.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PAN cancelled if I never linked it?
No. It stays inoperative, not cancelled. Paying the fee and linking restores it.
Do NRIs need to link?
Non-residents are exempt. If your residential status is not updated with the tax department, your PAN may still show as inoperative; update the status through your assessing officer.
Does linking fix tax already deducted at a higher rate?
Linking stops higher deductions going forward. Any tax already deducted shows in your Form 26AS and is counted when you file your return; speak to a tax professional if the amounts are large.
Can I link without paying the fee?
If you are in an exempt group, or your PAN was created through instant e-PAN, you do not need to pay. Everyone else must pay the ₹1,000 fee before the portal accepts the link.
