Update Name on Driving Licence India: Form LLD at RTO After Name Change
A name change on your driving licence requires a physical visit to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) that issued the licence. There is no fully online process for name changes on driving licences as of October 2026, though many states now accept applications via the Sarathi portal (sarathi.parivahan.gov.in) for initial submission.
Documents required
- Existing driving licence in the old name (original — will be surrendered)
- Form LLD — Application for Change of Address or Other Particulars (available at RTO or downloadable from parivahan.gov.in)
- Updated Aadhaar in the new name
- Marriage certificate (for marriage-related changes)
- Gazette notification copy (for other name changes)
- Two recent passport-size photographs
Step-by-step process
-
Update Aadhaar first. The RTO uses Aadhaar for identity verification via the Parivahan system. If Aadhaar still shows the old name, the change may not go through.
-
Download or collect Form LLD. Available at the RTO counter or on parivahan.gov.in under “Forms”. Fill in your current details, new name and reason for change.
-
Visit your issuing RTO. The DL must be surrendered to the RTO that originally issued it. If you have moved states, check with your current state’s RTO — some states allow transfer followed by correction.
-
Submit documents and pay. Submit Form LLD, original DL, updated Aadhaar, supporting name-change document and photographs. Pay the state-specific fee at the counter (typically ₹200–₹500).
-
Collect or wait for dispatch. Some RTOs issue a temporary certificate on the same day while the new DL is printed. Others dispatch the corrected DL by post. Timeline varies: 7–30 working days.
Fee
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| DL name change fee | ₹200–₹500 (state-specific; confirm with your RTO) |
Common problems
RTO says you need to surrender the current DL. This is correct. Your current DL is cancelled when the corrected one is issued. Ask for a temporary driving permit (if the RTO provides one) while you wait for the new DL.
Licence class or endorsements not transferred. Check the new DL when you receive it to ensure all vehicle classes and endorsements are carried over correctly. Report discrepancies to the RTO immediately.
