PAN Name Change India: Protean (NSDL) and UTIITSL Online Steps
Your PAN card must show your correct legal name, especially for income tax filing, financial transactions and KYC at banks and brokerages. You can update your PAN name online through Protean (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL without visiting any office.
Update Aadhaar before applying for PAN correction
The Protean and UTIITSL portals cross-reference your name against Aadhaar during online PAN corrections. If Aadhaar still shows the old name, the PAN correction may be rejected. Update Aadhaar first and wait for the download to be available. See our Aadhaar name update guide.
Documents required
- Updated Aadhaar in the new name (primary identity and address proof)
- Current PAN card in the old name
- Marriage certificate (for marriage-related name changes)
- Gazette notification copy (for surname or other name changes)
- School certificate or board mark sheet (accepted for minor spelling corrections)
Step-by-step: Protean portal
- Go to tinpan.proteantech.in and choose Change/Correction in PAN Data.
- Enter your existing PAN number and select the Name checkbox to indicate what is being corrected.
- Fill in the new name exactly as it should appear. It must match your updated Aadhaar.
- Choose the supporting document and upload a scanned copy.
- Pay the fee: ₹72 for e-PAN only, or ₹107 for e-PAN plus a printed card dispatched to an Indian address.
- Note the 15-digit acknowledgement number. Track status on the Protean portal. The corrected e-PAN is emailed within 2–5 working days.
Alternative: UTIITSL portal
The UTIITSL portal (utiitsl.com) offers the same PAN correction service. The process and fees are similar. Use whichever portal you find more convenient.
Fees
| Option | Fee |
|---|---|
| e-PAN only | ₹72 (₹66 paperless/Aadhaar e-KYC) |
| Printed card + e-PAN, Indian address | ₹107 (₹101 paperless) |
After the PAN correction
- Notify your employer’s payroll/HR department to update your name in TDS records.
- Update your demat account, mutual fund folios and trading accounts — most brokerages accept a PAN correction letter.
- Update your bank accounts with the corrected PAN.
