Detailed instructions

Update Voter ID Name After Name Change: Form 8 on Voter Portal India

Your Voter ID (officially the Electors Photo Identity Card, or EPIC) needs to be updated if you change your name. The process uses Form 8 — Correction of Entries in Electoral Roll — and can be submitted online or through your local Booth Level Officer (BLO).

Documents required

  • Current Voter ID in the old name
  • Updated Aadhaar in the new name (or any government ID in the new name)
  • Gazette notification copy or marriage certificate as name-change proof

Online process (voters.eci.gov.in)

  1. Go to voters.eci.gov.in and log in (or register with your mobile number).
  2. Choose Forms → Form 8 — Correction of entries in Electoral Roll.
  3. Enter your EPIC number and constituency details.
  4. Select Name as the field to be corrected and enter the new name.
  5. Upload a scanned copy of your updated Aadhaar and name-change proof.
  6. Submit and note the reference number.

The correction is forwarded to your Electoral Registration Officer for processing. The updated EPIC is dispatched within 30–60 days.

Offline process (through your BLO)

  1. Collect Form 8 from your local BLO or Electoral Registration Office.
  2. Fill in the form and attach self-attested copies of your Aadhaar and name-change proof.
  3. Submit to the BLO. Ask for an acknowledgement.

Fee

Voter ID name correction is free of charge.

Common problems

Correction rejected because the name change seems drastic. Very significant name changes (completely different name) may require additional verification by the ERO. Attach a gazette notification and affidavit to avoid rejection.

Voter roll still shows the old name after 60 days. Contact your Electoral Registration Office directly and quote the reference number. During election season, corrections may be paused.
