Get an Income Certificate in Karnataka: the complete guide

An income certificate is a short document from the Revenue Department that states your family’s yearly income. In Karnataka it is issued through the Nadakacheri system (also called Atalji Janasnehi Kendra), and you can apply online or at a centre near you. This guide is for students, job seekers, farmers and families who need the certificate for a scholarship, fee concession, welfare scheme or loan.

Who needs this

You will usually be asked for an income certificate when you apply for:

  • Post-matric and other state scholarships, hostel seats and fee reimbursement
  • Pension schemes and housing or welfare schemes run by the state
  • Reservation benefits where an income limit applies (for example, the caste-cum-income certificate for some backward classes)
  • Some bank loans and government job applications

The certificate covers the whole family’s income, not just the applicant’s. Many offices treat it as current for about 12 months, so if your scheme asks for a recent certificate, apply close to the deadline but leave enough time for verification.

Documents explained

Aadhaar card. This is your main identity proof. Keep the mobile number linked to Aadhaar handy, because the portal and the centres use OTPs.

Ration card. Karnataka ran a large drive called e-Kshana, in which Village Accountants verified ration card households and stored digitally signed income, caste and residence records. If your family’s record is in that database, the certificate can be printed almost instantly by searching with your ration card number. No ration card? The system lets you search with 9999 in place of the number.

Address proof. If you do not have a ration card, carry another proof of your current address in the hobli or ward, such as a voter ID or electricity bill.

Income declaration. The application form has a section where you declare the yearly income of every earning member. Be realistic: the Village Accountant may cross-check land, house, vehicles and lifestyle.

Income proof. Salaried people should bring a salary certificate or recent payslips. Farmers should bring the RTC (Pahani) for their land. Business owners can show a tax return, licence or bank statement.

Step-by-step process

  1. Start the request. Online, open the Nadakacheri portal, choose Online Application and log in with your mobile number. Offline, visit your hobli Nadakacheri, a Grama One centre, or a Karnataka One or Bangalore One centre.
  2. Search first. Select Income Certificate and search using ration card number, name and Aadhaar. If an exact record shows up, select it and print. You are done.
  3. Apply fresh if needed. If nothing matches, reject the near matches and fill in a new application. Pick the right ward or village, because the request goes to the official for that area. Choose English if you need an English-language certificate.
  4. Attach proofs and pay. Upload scans online or give copies to the operator, then pay the fee. Write down the acknowledgement number.
  5. Verification. The Village Accountant or Revenue Inspector checks your details, sometimes with a visit. The Deputy Tahsildar then approves or rejects the request.
  6. Get the certificate. Check the status with your acknowledgement number. Print it from the portal’s Print tab or collect it at the centre. Approved certificates also reach DigiLocker.

Fees and timelines

Item Amount
Application through Nadakacheri About ₹15
Private or franchise centres ₹15 plus a small service charge
Re-application after rejection Full fee again

The official list of Nadakacheri services gives a stipulated time of 21 days for an income certificate. Records already in e-Kshana can be printed on the spot. Confirm the current fee on the portal before you pay, as service charges are revised from time to time.

Common problems and fixes

  • Application rejected for missing documents. Rejections are not refunded. Check the reason using your acknowledgement number on the portal, fix the issue and apply again.
  • Wrong details entered online. Submitted applications cannot be edited. Either visit your hobli Nadakacheri and request a correction, or raise a new application.
  • Ward missing in the drop-down (Bengaluru). The portal links a ward list PDF; use it to find the correct ward for your street.
  • Delay beyond 21 days. Visit the hobli Nadakacheri with your acknowledgement. If that does not help, appeal to the Assistant Commissioner of your sub-division.
  • Lost acknowledgement number. The Nadakacheri helpdesk can trace it from your name, district, taluk, hobli and mobile number.

Frequently asked questions

Is a certificate from a cyber centre valid?

Yes, as long as it was raised through the Nadakacheri system and approved by the revenue official. Private centres only submit your request; approval still comes from the Tahsildar’s office.

Can I get the certificate in English?

Yes. Select the English option when you raise the request online or tell the operator at the centre.

How long is the income certificate valid?

The certificate does not carry a fixed expiry, but most departments accept one issued within the last 12 months. Check the rule of the scheme you are applying for.

What is the creamy layer limit in Karnataka?

For state purposes, families above a set annual income fall into the creamy layer and lose some backward class benefits. The Nadakacheri FAQ mentions ₹6 lakh based on an older order; confirm the current limit with your taluk office.

Do I need a separate certificate for the central government?

Central jobs and admissions often ask for their own format, such as the OBC (non-creamy layer) certificate or the EWS income and asset certificate. These are separate services on the same portal.
