Name Change After Marriage India: Update Aadhaar, PAN and Passport Step by Step
After marriage in India, you can change your surname on official documents without a Gazette notification in most cases. Your marriage certificate is the key document. This guide explains the correct order to update your IDs and the documents each authority accepts.
Key principle: update Aadhaar first
Aadhaar is the foundation for most other updates. Once your name is updated on Aadhaar, you can use the updated Aadhaar as identity proof at PAN, passport, driving licence and bank offices. Updating Aadhaar first makes every subsequent step faster and avoids mismatches.
Documents you will need throughout the process
- Marriage certificate issued by the Sub-Registrar or Municipal Corporation (this is your primary proof)
- Notarised affidavit on stamp paper declaring the name change (required by most authorities even with a marriage certificate)
- Current Aadhaar in your previous name
- Current PAN card in your previous name
- Passport-size photographs (keep 10–15 ready)
Step-by-step update sequence
Step 1 — Execute a notarised affidavit
Use the affidavit generator to draft it. Print on stamp paper and get it attested by a notary. Choose the reason “After marriage” in the generator.
Step 2 — Update Aadhaar (₹50)
Visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre with your marriage certificate, affidavit and current Aadhaar. Pay ₹50. The updated Aadhaar is available for download within 2–7 working days. See our Aadhaar name update guide.
Step 3 — Update PAN (₹72–₹107)
Once your Aadhaar is updated, apply for a PAN name correction on the Protean portal (tinpan.proteantech.in). Upload your updated Aadhaar and marriage certificate. The corrected e-PAN is emailed within 2–5 days. See our PAN name change guide.
Step 4 — Update passport (if you hold one)
Apply for a passport re-issue on passportindia.gov.in. You need your old passport, updated Aadhaar, PAN, and the marriage certificate. Book a PSK appointment. Fee: ₹1,500 (Normal) or ₹4,000 (Tatkaal for 36-page booklet). See our Passport name change guide.
Step 5 — Update driving licence
Visit your issuing RTO with Form LLD, your updated Aadhaar, marriage certificate and old DL. See our Driving licence name change guide.
Step 6 — Update voter ID (Free)
Submit Form 8 at voters.eci.gov.in or at your BLO with updated Aadhaar and marriage certificate. Free. See our Voter ID name change guide.
Step 7 — Update bank accounts and insurance
Visit each bank branch with your updated Aadhaar, PAN and marriage certificate. See our Bank account guide and Insurance guide.
Do I need a Gazette notification after marriage?
For most standard name changes after marriage, no. Aadhaar, PAN, passport and most banks accept a marriage certificate directly. However, some private employers, insurance companies and a few banks may still insist on a gazette notification. If one institution refuses, you can get a gazette notification (₹1,100 at egazette.gov.in) and use it everywhere else too.
Timeline at a glance
| Document | Estimated time |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar | 2–7 working days |
| PAN (e-PAN) | 2–5 working days |
| Passport (Normal) | 2–4 weeks |
| Driving licence | 7–30 working days |
| Voter ID | 30–60 days |
| Bank accounts | 7–15 working days |
Common problems
Bank refusing to update without a gazette. Escalate to the branch manager. Under RBI KYC guidelines, a marriage certificate with Aadhaar should be sufficient for KYC name change at a bank. If they still refuse, get a gazette notification.
PAN mismatch causing ITR filing issues. File your return with the new PAN name. If there is a mismatch with the employer’s records, ask HR to update the TDS return with the new name.
